What is the core difference between Yocto and Buildroot as described by the panelists?

A Yocto is a distribution builder with layered recipes and optional on-device package management; Buildroot is a firmware generator without on-device package management.

B Buildroot is the only system that provides on-device package management; Yocto cannot produce packages.

C Yocto is only intended for x86 desktop/server images while Buildroot is only for ARM boards.

D Buildroot always produces smaller images than Yocto and therefore should always be chosen for embedded use.

E Yocto is an IDE for writing embedded applications while Buildroot is a kernel debugger.

According to the discussion, what is the minimum hardware requirement you should expect to run a practical embedded Linux system?

A A processor with an MMU and roughly a few hundred megabytes of RAM/flash (e.g., ~512 MB), rather than tiny MCUs.

B Any 8-bit microcontroller or 32 kB RAM device can run a full Yocto Linux system.

C Linux runs fine without an MMU on typical embedded boards, so MMU is optional.

D You only need 64 kB of RAM and no flash to run a Yocto-generated distribution.

E Only desktop-class x86 CPUs can run Linux; ARM and other 32-bit chips cannot.

What did the panelists say about the PREEMPT_RT real-time patchset and when to use it?

A PREEMPT_RT gives improved (statistical) real-time behavior but not absolute worst-case guarantees; for very tight latency bounds consider a hypervisor and a separate RTOS core.

B PREEMPT_RT provides absolute hard real-time guarantees equivalent to an RTOS, so you never need a hypervisor or RTOS anymore.

C PREEMPT_RT is a user-space library you enable at runtime, not a kernel patch/configuration.

D PREEMPT_RT is enabled by default in most Yocto and embedded Linux configs and requires no special action.

E PREEMPT_RT removes the need to test latency on actual hardware because it mathematically bounds all latencies.

If you pick up a vendor board (for example an NXP board) and want to start customizing images, what practical first step did the panelists recommend?

A Start with the vendor-provided BSP/builds from their website and customize those as your baseline.

B Immediately discard vendor BSPs and rebuild everything from scratch with a random desktop Linux distribution.

C Only use emulators like QEMU and never look at the vendor BSP when targeting a real board.

D Install a desktop distribution such as Ubuntu and use its package manager as-is for production devices.

E Use Buildroot exclusively without consulting the vendor because vendor BSPs are always useless.

Which tool did panelists point to as providing a file-based, git-like OS update mechanism that supports delta updates to minimize data transferred for OTA updates?

A OSTree — it provides a file-based update capability at the OS level and shares objects between versions for delta updates.

B SWUpdate — it is a git-based file-level updater that inherently performs filesystem delta updates like OSTree.

C APT — the standard Debian package manager inherently performs file-based delta OS updates for embedded devices.

D Yocto build system — it natively handles OTA delta updates for devices without any additional tooling.

E A simple scp of the full root filesystem is the recommended method for delta updates.
